Then, as your body metabolizes the alcohol mid-night, the effect reverses: sleep fragments, REM sleep gets suppressed and rebounds chaotically, awakenings multiply, and the second half of the night turns shallow and restless. The result is the signature experience every drinker knows: a full night “asleep,” a morning that feels like half of one. Alcohol doesn’t reduce your sleep so much as it hollows it out.

Timing. Since clearance takes roughly an hour per drink, the same drinks land differently depending on the clock. A glass of wine at 19:00 is largely metabolized by a 23:00 bedtime; the identical glass at 22:30 is peaking as you fall asleep and rebounding at 03:00. The practical rule: finish drinking three or more hours before bed, scaling up with quantity. Timing doesn’t make alcohol good for sleep — it decides how much of the bill lands on tonight.
