You don’t need to learn it so much as notice it: your body already produces this exact pattern spontaneously every few minutes, and it’s what children do instinctively as sobbing subsides.   1. Inhale deeply through the nose — a full, unforced breath.
  2. Without exhaling, take a second short inhale — a quick sniff stacked on top, topping the lungs up. This second inhale is the signature move; don’t skip it.
  3. Exhale long and slow through the mouth — unhurried, letting it run naturally longer than the combined inhales, until the lungs feel comfortably empty.
  4. Repeat one to three times. One is often enough to feel the shift; three is a full reset. Then breathe normally — this is a reset, not an ongoing practice.

That’s the entire technique. No counting, no timing, no position. If nasal congestion is in the way, mouth inhales work at a slight discount.

Why the double inhale matters

The mechanics are elegant. Your lungs contain hundreds of millions of alveoli — the tiny air sacs where gas exchange happens — and under stress, with breathing shallow, a portion of them progressively collapse. The first inhale fills the lungs; the second, stacked inhale pops collapsed alveoli back open, briefly maximizing the surface available for offloading carbon dioxide. The physiological sigh moved from physiology textbooks to practical technique through recent controlled work — most prominently a 2023 Stanford study comparing a month of daily five-minute breathing practices against mindfulness meditation. The “cyclic sighing” group (repeated physiological sighs) showed the largest improvements in daily positive mood and reductions in anxiety and respiratory rate — outperforming both meditation and other breathing patterns in that trial. It’s one study of modest size, so the honest framing is “promising and mechanistically sound” rather than “proven miracle” — but the acute effect (feeling calmer within a minute) is easy to verify on yourself, immediately, for free, which is a standard little in wellness can match.

One honest boundary: the sigh lowers arousal; it doesn’t resolve what raised it.
